HISTORICAL NOTE: The British recruited these companies to fight the war on St. Domingue ( later Haiti), 1793 -98. They were also often used on campaigns on other Caribbean islands. British officers were often seconded from their regiments to command these companies; they would usually wear their old uniforms with tropical adaptations. Total strength of the Black Chasseurs reached about 4500 men. Later, many of them were amalgamated to form new West Indies regiments.
